The visit starts with a visit of the Beekrumsing Ramlallah Interpretation Centre (30 to 40 minutes) followed by a visit to the World Heritage Property (20 minutes).<\/p>\n

Beekrumsing Ramlallah Interpretation Centre (BRIC)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Centre is one of the rare places dedicated to indenture in the world. Through its dynamic and modern exhibition, the centre presents the establishment and development of the indentured system as well as the experience of indentured labourers at the immigration depot in Mauritius.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cen<\/span>tre was named after Beekrumsing Ramlallah (1915-2000), Journalist and Member of Parliament, in homage to his commitment to recognize the<\/span><\/p>\n

 Aapravasi Ghat as a landmark in the history of the nation. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Centre opened on 3 November 2014. It was inaugurated on 2 November 2014 in the context of the 180th Anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers in Mauritius.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site, remains of an Immigration Depot built in 1849, is located in Port-Louis, the capital of Mauritius, where the modern indentured labour diaspora began.<\/p>\n

The Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site was inscribed in 2006 under criteria v<\/a>i as:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first site chosen by the British Government in 1834 for the great experiment in the use of indentured rather than slave Labour, is strongly associated with memories of almost half a million indentured labourers moving from India to Mauritius to work on sugarcane plantations or to be transshipped to other parts of the World.\u201d (World heritage Committee Decision 30COM 8B.33)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    The Outreach Program was designed to offer presentations and talks on the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Property and indenture in locations throughout the island. Booking and more information on 217 77 70.<\/p>

    Educational Resources<\/strong><\/p>

    Several educational resources can be accessed and downloaded by teachers to engage their students with the history of the Aapravasi Ghat and the indenture system. Theses resources provide the perfect opportunity to discover the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site without leaving the classroom and can also complement an onsite visit as a form of pre and post learning.<\/p>

    Accessibility<\/strong><\/p>

    The World Heritage Site is accessible with a wheelchair.\u00a0 All galleries and main area of the Interpretation Centre are accessible to wheelchairs. There are accessible toilets with good facilities.\u00a0 \u00a0

    The Interpretation Centre does not provide parking for visitors.
